Battle of Algiers – few changes from the last post.

November 19th, 2005 by · No Comments · General

What:  A great film “The Battle of Algiers”, pizza and drinks

When:  5:30 PM Tuesday, November 22nd

Where:  Warren room 145

Who:  All CIPA students, alumni, professors and their friends and family

Why:  This event is organized by the Public Affairs International Student
Organization
(with the help of Alston Ho – thank you!) and sponsored by
Women in Public Policy.  “The Battle of Algiers” is a very powerful film
about the French colonial rule in Algeria and the people in that region
who fought for freedom and justice.  The topics addressed in the film are
racism, religion, westernization, and most of all freedom fighting (or
terrorism, depending on your perspective).

Movie Screening: Battle of Algiers

WiPP & CPAS present: Battle of Algiers

Tues, Nov 22nd @ 5:30pm

Gillo Pontecorvo’s presents a harrowing, documentary-style depiction of the Algerian’s people’s struggle to liberate themselves from France between 1954 and 1962. The film creates a stunning illusion of realism by combining actual newsreel footage with staged sequences featuring amateur and professional actors playing characters based on real people (including Saadi Yacef, the one-time leader of the FLN in occupied Algiers). With it’s depiction of political torture and violence retaining every bit of the impact they had upon the film’s original release, THE BATTLE FOR ALGIERS was re-released theatrically in 2003 to great acclaim and reevaluation. Winner of 11 International Film awards. Academy Award Nominations: Best Director, Best (Original) Story and Screenplay.

Hey!

Northy Country is playing at Hoyts at the mall at 7:15pm on Thursday. We can all car pool after colloquium. I hope everyone can make it!

North Country Synopsis:

The true story of one of America’s first successful sexual harassment lawsuits comes to the screen in this hard-hitting drama. In the late ’70s, Josey Aimes (Charlize Theron) was a single mother after the unhappy breakup of her marriage, and she needed to find a way to support her children. Aimes returned to her hometown in Minnesota and followed the lead of her old friend Glory (Frances McDormand), who had bucked tradition and found a job in the iron mines that had long provided employment for much of the community. Aimes found honest labor and a living wage working the iron mines, but she also discovered she was working with men who were uncomfortable working with women (whose right to work in the mines had been mandated by law), and didn’t care to show them much respect. However, as Aimes found herself the growing target of sexist jokes and behavior, she found that many of her female co-workers were reluctant to stand beside her, afraid of losing a good-paying job at a time when they were increasingly hard to find. But as a small crisis became a war of words, Aimes became the center of a nationwide controversy when she filed a sexual harassment suit against the mine owners which put her and her family in a position of scrutiny she never expected. North Country also stars Sean Bean, Sissy Spacek, and Woody Harrelson. ~

Possible speakers

October 14th, 2005 by · No Comments · General

I met with Shambhu Oja yesterday concerning potential speakers for WIPP. As follows is a brief description of the two individuals that we discussed, and possible issues that WIPP would need to address before we can get these speakers.

The Nepalese Ambassador to the United States
Ambassador Shrestha was the Royal Nepalese Ambassador to the European Union before gaining his post in the United States. WIPP would need to send an official letter to the Royal Nepalese Embassy, requesting that the Ambassador come speak at Cornell. As Ambassador Shrestha is located in Washington DC, it would be relatively cheap for WIPP to fly him to Ithaca for a presentation. We would need to determine the total costs before sending the letter.
For more information go to the Royal Nepalese Embassy site.

South Asia Regional Director, UNIFEM
Chandni Joshi is the Regional Programme Director of UNIFEM for South Asia. Her daughter attended Ithaca College a few years ago and she still has fairly strong ties in the Ithaca area (for instance, she remains good friends with Prof. March). As such it would be a fairly easy prospect to get Ms. Joshi to give a presentation for WIPP. However, she is located in New Delhi, India and WIPP would need to find the funds to bring her to Ithaca. We could possibly cosponsor the event or could apply to the GPSA for funding, among other available options.
For more information to the the UNIFEM site.
